5. Kut Klose
Under the direction of slow jam veteran Keith Sweat, Kut Klose provided the sensual side of R&B that you no longer hear from girl groups today. Wait a minute… There are no girl groups out today. Though they only released one album, Kut Klose gave us incredible classics from the 1995 underground classic Surrender.
If you were born before 1985, you should be able to appreciate the smooth and melodic voices of these three young ladies.
Most notable song:
“Get up on it”
4. After 7
Produced by none other than legendary music producer Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, After 7 delivered the same gentle romance sound known best from Boyz II Men. After writing and producing hits for so many popular music acts, Babyface decided to give his brothers a chance and produced their debut album, After 7 in 1989.
Lead singer and older brother of Babyface, Kevon Edmonds, torched every track on their debut album and the following two studio albums.
Most notable song:
“Til you do me right”
3. Silk
They say timing is everything. Maybe 90’s R&B group Silk just couldn’t get their foot in the door at the right time. After Jodeci and just before Dru Hill stepped onto the scene entered another passionate group that too delivered that sexual R&B sound.
Their debut album, produced by Darryl Delight, delivered on the money with intense lovemaking style R&B. When a song from their album came through the speakers, you knew just what time it was.
Most notable song:
“Freak me”
2. Brownstone
Signed and produced by the late Michael Jackson, Brownstone was another group that blew the eardrums out of anyone listening. This group was one of many 90’s acts that managed to combine that Gospel choir sound with R&B.
Considered to be the only act on Michael Jackson’s MJJ Records, Brownstone never reached the mass popularity that their talent deserved. Still, anyone who listens to their two albums will agree that these three ladies were a force.
Most notable song:
“Grapevyne”
1. SWV
When you think of popular 90’s girl groups, you think first of TLC. Next, you think of Destiny’s Child. But you can never leave SWV out of the conversation. SWV did not come close to the same level of commercial success as TLC or Destiny’s Child, but they had a sound that put their stamp on 90’s R&B music.
Lead singer Coko could hold her own against any singer to ever sing a verse in the 90’s and still can today. SWV also holds the distinct honor of being one of the first musical acts to be produced by then unknown production duo, The Neptunes.
Most notable song (a):
“Right Here”
Most notable song (b):
“Use Your Heart” (produced by The Neptunes)
